As human beings, routine is a necessary part of our lives. For most of us, the routine is that we we wake up on Monday morning, head into work, get home in the afternoon, and then do it four more times that week. Weekends are usually filled with getting the chores done, heading out for a bite to eat, and maybe seeing some friends. Of course there is a bit of variety thrown in for good measure too, because as they say, variety is the spice of life.
But when it comes to an oral health routine, are you doing things correctly? Every dentist will tell you that you need to be brushing on a daily basis, but do you have a routine down or are you doing it differently every time? We understand that it can be difficult to come up with the ideal solution, but fortunately for you, we’re here to help. Wondering how you can improve your routine and enjoy optimal oral health? Keep reading to find out!
How to Brush Effectively
Chances are that if you’re anything like most people, you don’t even really give brushing much thought. Sure, you break out your toothbrush first thing in the morning and you probably do the same before you head to bed in the evening. Here’s the question though–do you brush side to side, or do you brush up and down? Do you brush in small circles? Is each tooth getting enough attention? Are you taking good care of your gums?
The case we’d like to make here is that you should simply pay a bit more attention when you’re going about your daily brushing. Pay special attention to each tooth and ensure that you cover everything perfectly. Trust us when we say that it’s much better than simply breezing through the process and finding out you’ve been doing it wrong later.
Of course we’d also be happy to advise you on how to get the most out of your time brushing when you’re here for your next appointment. Whether you’re looking for general advice or you have a specific question, your dentist is here to help. Our goal is to make sure that you have a happy and healthy mouth, you know!
What Else Can You Be Doing?
You probably also know that you should be flossing. We’ve written in the past about the subject and the takeaway is that whether you use traditional floss, floss picks, or a water flosser, the key is to be certain that you are doing it regularly.
We’ve also discussed mouthwash and although one of its biggest benefits is that it helps to keep your breath smelling clean and fresh, it can also help to wash away bits of debris that you may have missed while brushing or flossing.
You can also employ the use of foods for your overall health, believe it or not. Cheese, tea, and yogurt are all beneficial to your mouth in some way or another. Apples can help to clean your teeth as well as keep your gums in good condition. Ever bit into an apple and noticed that your gums were bleeding? That’s a good indicator that you need to change your habits again and we’d be happy to advise you on that process. You can also start swishing around coconut oil to help clean out between your teeth and gently massage your gums, but be sure to brush and rinse your mouth out thoroughly afterwards.
